Artist Bio
Yu Chen, also known as Joy, is a UK-based guzheng performer, committed to presenting traditional Chinese music within an international and contemporary context.
She began studying the guzheng at the age of four, building a strong technical foundation through years of dedicated training. During her early years in China, she received multiple awards in youth music competitions, specialising in traditional Chinese instrumental performance.
At the age of 17, Yu moved to the United Kingdom for her academic studies. Although her formal education was not in music, she has continuously pursued guzheng performance alongside her studies, maintaining an active presence in the field.
Over the years, Yu has performed at a wide range of concerts, cultural events, and large-scale productions across the UK. Her work focuses on introducing the guzheng to diverse audiences, creating accessible and engaging musical experiences that bridge Eastern tradition and Western cultural spaces.
She has taken part in major music events and international showcases, and has received recognition through global music awards. Her performance style is characterised by clarity of technique, sensitivity in tone, and a strong sense of musical narrative.
In addition to performing, Yu is dedicated to promoting Chinese traditional music and fostering cultural exchange in the UK. Through her work, she seeks to position the guzheng as both a classical instrument and a relevant voice in today’s global artistic landscape.
